Short: We can highly recommend Merapoh Adventure! Nizam is a one of a kind host, who always answered quickly on our mails beforehand and our questions when we were in Malaysia. He is attentive, cheerful and also quite curious other cultures and countries. If you are looking for a more local jungle experience without many tourists around you, this is definitely something you should consider. Disclaimer: If you have a fear of leeches, reconsider your choice to go into the jungle, no matter where, since they are pretty much everywhere.Long: To give some context why we stumbled across Merapoh: On our trip, we where coming from the Perhentians and wanted to get a jungle tour on our way to Penang, with a second stop after in the Cameron Highlands. This meant, that we did not want to access Taman Negara from the south, since this would have taken much longer ( aprox. 5 h one way). That why decided to give book a tour with Nizam, since it was more or less on our route. To be fair: getting to Merapoh took some time as well, since the connection via public transport is quite difficult. But when we went on to the Cameron Highlands, Nizam organized a driver for us, for an absolutely reasonable price.
Some words regarding the tour: we booked a 3D2N trekking tour with one night in the jungle. Since we arrived late on the first day, we stayed on night longer in Nizams guesthouse, which provides all necessities. The next morning Nizam drove us to the entrance of the national park, where the guide, Nazar, was waiting for us. We actually we the only two people this day, so we kind of a had a private tour. From there a truck brought us deep into the jungle to the base-camp from where we started our 20 km hike (one way) to the waterfall. The way to the waterfall crosses four streams and has for the most part a short to medium incline. Some part your have to use your hands as well, but nothing to difficult, since time is not a critical factor and the guide is always with you. The waterfall was stunning and swimming there was definitely one of t he highlights of this trip! In the late afternoon we got hit with aprox. 2 hours of dense rain, but I guess thats why they call it rain forest. Nazar even cooked for us in the evening and we spent the night in a tent, with the sounds of the night jungle around us, which is quite memorable. After breakfast the next morning we made our way back to the base camp, the same way we came, which went a lot fast, since its downhill for most of the time. WE arrived at noon at the camp, where we got taken back to the entrance by a truck and picked up by Nizam again. There we spent the rest of the day exploring Merapoh.The only hic up in this whole trip was that there was a mix up with our plan and we had to wait to the next day to got the fish sanctuary and the look out tower. If we would have known beforehand we would have rescheduled an spent a night less, but it was not a big deal. This was lost in the communication.
And some final words to Nizam: As mentioned a great host and totally engaging. He took us to dinner himself two nights and to breakfast in the morning, where we had, hands down, the best Roti Canai on our whole trip. Neat local places, which we would have not found our self. He was quite curious about our home country and we got into long talks regarding the differences and similarities. He tended to our every needs and was always ready to help. With such an outgoing personality and drive, it was easy to see, why he was friends with everyone and always in a good mood. You can tell he loves Merapoh and his home and wants to share it with the world. If we should ever be in Malaysia again, we will definitely go back there, just to have breakfast with Nizam.
What an experience ! With my gf we did both the 1 day trek to the waterfall and the 2 days trek to the bat cave, we are still astonished about how good it was (even if still hot and humid)For the 1D waterfall trek we were with Deen, a lovely local guide who explained every single tree and plant to us, looked for snake and scorpions to show us and was so interested in the jungle and us as well! This guy was a beautiful person who was passionate about its job and showed us the jungle like we would never knew ! The trek itself was pretty easy, something like 4 hours walking, a bit hilly but nothing too hard. A bit disappointed about the waterfall who was full of people on this period of the year and quite small. The Asli Village felt awkward, as if we were in a human zoo... I'll talk about that a bit later.Next day, we went on the 2 days trek with a night in the bat cave. Our guide was Mario this time, and once again, what a lovely little guy ! Passionate, interesting, king, helpful and always smiling, spoke quite a good English and even some French sentences! Once again he taught us a lot about his native village and jungle, the whole trip was a lot more enjoyable with a guide like him ! The trek itself was challenging the first day with all your equipment and the heat of the day but it was way worth it ! We had discovered so much in this jungle in 2 days and all the little challenges were really worth it ! The night in the cave was an interesting experience and we didn't sleep too bad (wasn't too comfy but who could expect a comfy night in a bat cave ?)But PLEASE, please, don't do like us and BOOK DIRECTLY with the local guide. Don't go to an agency.You have to know that a certain law over Taman Negara forbid the local guide to advertise themselves. They have to work for an agencie if they want a job. So our agency (Danz Eco) was paying them around 300MYR for the 1D trek (with 11 people so we paid 1650MYR total) and roughly 400MYR for the 2 days trek (8 people so around 1900MYR). Not mentioning the fact that they pay the Bateq (Local tribe) 5MYR per person only for their show in these horrible human zoos
So please, local guide can't do their own advertisements but if you contact them they will arrange you the trip of your choice with no minimum person, with how many days you want and where you want ! (Our agency denied us the 3 days trek because there were not enough people...)
Reached the Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Center around noon. Part of our tour from Kuala Lumpur. Also called Selamat Datang. Watched a movie before going out to view the elephants. We were able to feed the elephants and watch them getting a bath in the river. Then went to the stands and watched their trainers interact before we were offered photo opportunities.
Great park in the middle of Malaysian Peninsula, although requires a fair bit of maintenance. From the south enter by long boat, then pay an entrance fee per day plus fee for using a camera/phone camera, total RM6/day entrance.
